Gaspar Enriquez

Gaspar Enriquez is a Chicano painter, portrait artist, and educator. He was born and raised in El Segundo Barrio of El Paso and is based in San Elizario. Enriquez's body of work portrays the subcultures that have endured in the Mexican-American community since the second world war. They explore the history and continuity of Chicano culture on the US-Mexico border.

Enriquez completed his Bachelor's degree at the University of Texas at El Paso in 1970 and his Master's degree from New Mexico State University in 1985. He taught art at Bowie High School for 34 years. Enriquez has stated that "one is born a Mexican American, but one chooses to be a Chicano." His art reflects the lifestyle in the barrios that have been passed down for generations, as well as his personal relationships and the events in his environment. His work has been collected by museums such as The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, de Young Museum, Tucson Museum Of Art, and the El Paso Museum of Art, among many others.
